Introduction

  • Colosse was a large town whose importance had been overtaken by Ephesus and Laodicea.
    • Paul had spent 3 years ministering in Ephesus, during which time Epaphras, who was from Colosse, had heard him teach and had become a Christian.
    • Upon his return to Colosse he was involved in the starting of the church of Colosse.
      • The town was mainly gentile but it had a sizeable Jewish population as well
      • And this Jewish/Gentile profile was reflected in the church.
  • Epaphras’s concern was that there were elements within the church who were starting to push certain heresies.
    • The gentiles pushed gnostic philosophy and the Jews pushed the Law.
    • So Epaphras contacts and discusses these things with Paul who writes this letter to the church of Colosse.
  • It is an important letter not only because of the situation in Colosse but because much of what we see there is very prevalent in our society today.
    • And Medway is in many ways very similar to the Colossian church…
      • We have faithful people, loving people, willing people.
      • So it becomes important to us at Medway.
  • The gnostic philosophy claimed only spirit was good and all matter was evil.
    • Therefore Jesus who was born of Mary (Flesh) was not equal to God…
      • He was one of a number of created emanations away from God.
    • And man has to wind his way thru the emanations to get to God.
      • This demanded special knowledge thus the name gnostic.
    • From there the theology of docetism develops…
      • They believe that Jesus is a spirit not a reality.
        • Docetism comes from the Greek “dokein” which means “it seems”
          • Jesus looks/seems real but is not real flesh and blood.
      • The problem with all of that is, if that is true, there is then no death for sin or resurrection to new life.
    • On the other hand the Jews were saying Jesus is all very well but he is not enough to satisfy God's demands and we need to add certain parts of the Law of Moses as well.
  • So there are 2 problems to deal with…
    • The gnostic philosophy which defamed the status of Jesus…
    • The Jews who defame the sufficiency of Jesus.
  • Paul manages the situation by proclaiming sound doctrine concerning the supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of Christ… Colossians 1:15-23
    • Colossians is a mere 4 chapters but the quality and quantity of sound doctrine is astounding.
    • So the elders of Medway who are keenly aware of the need to protect sound doctrine have decided to do a series on the book.

Importance of sound doctrine

  • In many churches today sound doctrine is a low priority.
    • To many people good sound doctrine is regarded as…
      • Narrow minded…
      • Old fashioned and out of touch…
      • Boring and unnecessary
    • The teachers of truth become the enemy rather than saviours of truth.
  • Research done by Tim Challies, a Canadian pastor, on the subject shows that there are hundreds of churches in the USA alone where false doctrine is tolerated and even enjoyed.
    • The problem is that we like to hear and espouse that which is convenient and benefits our emotional state.
      • But Paul warns against this…
        • For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; they will heap to themselves teachers having itching ears… and they will turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned to fables… 2 Timothy 4:3-4
      • So the likes of Sarah Young produces a devotional book entitled Jesus Calling which sells 46m copies and she teaches Christian Mysticism.
    • But the problem is the truth of God's word often makes us uncomfortable and challenges change.
      • Which is what the Lord Jesus wants to achieve in us… Philippians 1:6
        • His purpose is to achieve Christ-likeness in us…
        • And we have to admit that it demands great changes which for many of us takes a lifetime.
  • So Paul in his writings challenges the teachers…
    • Titus … Titus 2:1
      • You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.
    • Timothy… 1 Timothy 1:3-11
      • Paul has a lot to say about sound doctrine in his letters to Timothy
        • He instructs Timothy to oppose that which is contrary to sound doctrine
      • He warns of a falling away due to the acceptance of false doctrine… 1 Timothy 4:1
    • Elsewhere we are warned about…
  • Notice the modus operandi…
    • It is not confrontational  from outside…
    • It is deceitful from within the church.
      • They take some truth to mask their error.
  • It is true that there are many outside agencies that oppose Christianity…
    • States like Russia, China, North Korea and many Muslim countries.
    • But even more damage is done in Churches who teach false doctrine and are leading their congregations to a lost eternity.
      • They teach…
        • A convenient health and wealth gospel
        • Hyper grace…
        • Universalism
        • New Revelations
        • Relativism
      • They deny…
        • The Trinity
        • Existence of hell
        • Christ's humanity
        • Virgin birth
        • Resurrection
        • Christ return
    • Be very particular about which authors books you read…
      • Or T.V. blogs you expose yourselves to.
  • So the message we need to hear, teach and live out is the sound doctrine that teaches the fullness of Christ… as found in scripture… Colossians 1:19 & 2:9
    • All too often we hear that Christ is not enough and that we need something more…
      • Some more exciting experiences … tongues, slain in the Spirit
      • Some extra-biblical prophecies …Bible is incomplete.
      • Some miraculous events … miracles.
    • But Scripture says…
      • The Son is the radiance of God's glory, the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things… Hebrews 1:3
  • The challenges are often not convenient or comfortable…
    • But the Lord is doing a work in us for our benefit.

Colossians

  • The aim and purpose of this church (Medway) is to persevere in truth
    • Therefore we study Paul's letter to the Colossian church
      • Chapter 1 & 2
        • Where we will learn the truth about The Lord Jesus Christ
        • Who exactly he is …Supremacy
        • His purpose in coming down to this earth …Sufficiency
      • Chapter 3 & 4
        • Rule for Holy living and Christian households…
          • We will know what changes we need to make in our lives…
          • Because change must come about.

Paul's authority…vs 1

  • Paul has never visited Colosse and his introduction is interesting…
    • Remember the purpose of the letter is to correct false teachings.
      • On what grounds or authority does he go in and tell them what to do.
    • So he introduces himself as…
      • An apostle of Christ Jesus…
        • As an apostle of Christ Paul is an appointed messenger with a particular brief that must be carried out.
      • He is appointed by the will of God…
    • Herein lies all the authority of Heaven to deal with the heresies and the heretics.
      • And he addresses it to the holy and faithful brothers for actioning

The starting point…vs 3

  • We must remember that this is not a task to be taken lightly…
    • False doctrine has numerous impacts on any church…
      • Causes ignorance of God and his holiness
      • Ignorance of the person and work of Jesus Christ
      • Deny existence of hell
      • We expect and demand things of God that he never promised…
      • Causes us to continue in sin
      • Divides the church
    • Never forget that what you believe will always dictate your actions…
      • So false doctrine will have dire consequences for you.
  • Paul's instruction is to deal severely with false teachers… Titus 3:10, 2 John 1:10
    • Have nothing to do with them, do not entertain them.
  • So Paul start with this important task of protecting the truth… with prayer… vs 3

Frequency in Prayer… Ch 1:3-14

  • For Paul prayer was a major component of his ministry…
    • As we study his other letters the matter of prayer is always present…
      • Thessalonians, Timothy, Colossians, Philippians…
  • Frequently in prayer…
    • Always thank God for your faith and love… vs 3
      • Always means without exception on every occasion, repeatedly.
    • We have not stopped praying for you… vs 9
  • Study church history and you will see that all of the great revivals were backed up by prayer…
    • E.g. Billy Graham while he preached.
  • Challenge… how often do we pray for the church…
    • When we pray our  prayers are most often self-centered.
    • But here Paul is in prison  and his own circumstances are far from his mind
      • He prays for the churches
  • There are 2 main components to his prayers…
    • Firstly it is thanksgiving… Gratitude… vs 3… X6
    • Secondly it is for growth in their Christian experience… vs 9-14

Gratitude in Prayer

  • We always thank the Lord… vs 3
    • An attitude of gratitude is always the best way to start the day…
      • Even in the past few months with the heartache we have endured recently there have always been occasions to give thanks.
  • Thanks and praise appear in all of Paul's letters with one exception… Galatians…
    • His circumstances were hardly ever ideal…
      • But even in his suffering he found reason to express gratitude.
    • Here he is in prison but he rejoices in the growth of the gospel throughout the world… vs 6
  •  Gratitude should be a norm for us… complaining an exception.

Prayer for Growth…vs 9-14

  • We have not stopped praying for you and askingvs 9
    • This is what is known as intercessory prayer
      • And it is an important component of the Christian experience.
  • We are not here to live for ourselves… We are members of the body of Christ the church.
    • And even as our bodies are our great concern…
      • So should the body of the church be our concern
    • So it is important to pray for one another.
  • Look at Paul's prayer…
    • Immediate… since the day we heard
    • Incessant… we have not stopped praying
    • Intense… never stop asking.
    • United in prayer… We… prayer meetings
    • Purposeful… vs 10-11
      • Walk worthy… of Jesus Christ
      • Pleasing Him (Jesus Christ)
      • Bearing fruit for Jesus Christ
      • Growing in knowledge of Jesus Christ
      • Strengthened, enduring by the power of Jesus Christ
      • Joyfully giving thanks to Jesus Christ
        • These all add up to growth in our Christian experience.
        • He is praying for change/growth in these faithful people.
  • What is our motivation…
    • We love the Father who has qualified us to inherit eternal life…
    • This is our great hope… vs 12

Conclusion

  • Sound doctrine is the foundation
  • Bearing fruit is underwritten by prayer
  • Gratitude to God for qualifying us to inherit
  • Love for God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is our motivation.
    • The challenge is… are we willing to change.
