Good morning to you my precious family.

Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

We all want to see exactly where we’re going in life, from start to finish, and we want to see it all at once. The most striking thing about this beautiful verse is that while we are told we will have light for our journey, but it will normally only be for one step at a time.

In ancient times, the only lights were small oil lamps. These lamps were no more than a palm-sized bowl, filled with oil and a single wick. They provided just enough light to illuminate a small area around you. With their open tops, they were better suited for indoor use, not walking around outside. If you had to walk along a forest path, with a small, old-fashioned lamp, on a pitch-dark night, you would only see one step ahead. Once you take that step, the lamp moves forward enough to light the next place to put your foot. Eventually you reach your destination safely because you never walked beyond the light, so you were never in the dark. You were lighted all the way to where you were going, even though it was only a single step at a time.

God's guidance is very much the same. If, by the light of God’s Word, we refuse to worry about tomorrow and trust Him for this day, then we find both the grace and the guidance needed for every circumstance. Just as the lantern illuminates each new step on a dark path, so the lamp of Scripture provides light on our spiritual pathway. We don’t need to see beyond what the Lord reveals. He promises that there will always be enough light for each step on His pathway.

Our lives can sometimes feel like we are walking in the dark. The night descends around us and we can’t see the path forward. We are uncertain about the path I’m supposed to take and I’m afraid of the dangers and unknowns beyond my current spot. I’m tempted to stay put where the light still illuminates. We can be reluctant to venture out and take that next step, because we can’t see what lies beyond. We do not know where the next step will take us as we are reluctant to leave the safety of what’s known. But God calls us to follow the path He lays before us. Often, He will only illuminate one step at a time, lighting our way with a small oil lamp.

2 Samuel 22:29 says, “You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.” The Lord calls us to trust Him, even in the dark, stepping forward even though we cannot see the rest of the path. Take a step, take a step, keeping your eyes fixed on God and the single steps He shows you to take. King David reminds us in Psalm 19 verses 7-10 how personal and wonderful God's Word is to His people. “The instruction of the LORD is perfect, renewing one's life; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the LORD are right, making the heart glad; the command of the LORD is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold—than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.”

God’s Word is our compass in life. It is also our guide, our helper, our deliverer, our peace, our joy, our redemption and our everlasting promise.

The Psalmist says in verse 105 that the "Word of God" is a lamp to his feet and a light to his path. The light of God's Word makes things clear and visible so that we will not trip and fall into the traps and snares of the enemy and He leads us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

The Word of God is the Christian’s life support, our sustaining power, our oxygen tank, our feeding tube, our guiding light and our eternal hope of glory. So as believers, we must daily search the Word of God, study it, believe it and obey it for indeed it is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

Without the light of God's Word, we will continue to stumble in the dark. We will never make it to our destination because we will not be able to see our way out of where we are. It is the light of God's Word that illuminates our path.

To walk in the light, we must as Matthew 7:13-14 says, Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

The Word of God has the power unto salvation. It is the Word of God that has led all of us who are saved; out of darkness into God's marvellous light. The Word of God is a guiding light. The challenge is whether we are being led by it? Or, are we still walking in darkness?

Young people, how many times in life do you just wish that you knew the ‘right’ thing to do? You might be faced with a decision about what college to attend, what career path to take, who to date, or which sport to play. All of these decisions have consequences and you wish that someone would just tell you what to do.

When making decisions, it’s often easy to ignore what verse 105 tells us. The Bible is a lamp to guide our feet and a light for our path. It tells us that when we don’t know what the right choice is, we should rely on God’s Word for help. God’s Word can be the answer to your questions. It can be the light to show you which path to take. The key is to spend time in God’s Word, getting to know the Lord Jesus and what God says. God’s Word will bring light and help you make the right decision.

Often the decision we are to make seems much clearer. So the next time you’re faced with a tough decision, do what this Bible verse says. Spend some time in God’s Word and let it guide you into making good decisions.

In Psalm 119 we are given a beautiful promise and an eternal truth- that God's Word is a gleaming lamp to our feet, it provides a sure foundation upon which to stand, that will guide us through the darkness of this fallen world and it is a shining light to brighten the pathway we take.

The Word of God is an inextinguishable lamp, which guides us along the right path and it is a radiant light that banishes the shadows of uncertainty, by illuminating the next step in this sin-soaked world.

So the challenge I leave each of with is: - Are we following the light of God and allowing Him to lead and direct us? Are we staying where we are, afraid to trust God and venture out into the darkness? Or, are we trying to light our own torch and make our own path?

So my friends, remember the sweet honeycomb is calling. The milk is ready. Flip open that leather cover, pop open that Bible app, and taste and see—for yourself, “that the Lord is good” and that His Word endures forever.

Let us pray.

Thank You Father God for Your guiding light, for indeed it is a light unto my path. As believers You call us to follow where You lead. Help us to fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus, the Author and perfecter of our faith. Thank You for Your Word which is a lamp for our feet and a light on my path. Show me the way in the darkness, illuminating the path You have chosen for me. When I’m uncertain and afraid, fill me with Your strength, reminding me that You are by my side. We trust You to light just enough of our path to walk with You this day, following the light of Your path, and allowing the path of the world to fade away. Lead me, Lord, and show me Your way. Lord Holy Spirit help me see the wisdom of Your word as it relates to my life today and every day. Help me set my heart on keeping Your laws all the days of my life. Amen.

Much love in Christ to you from Maurice and Margaret.
